The complete guide for operators & DMCs selling China travel

Tour operators are winning China-bound clients on social media.
Here is the complete playbook.

China re-opened to the world with 35.17 million foreign tourist visits in 2025 — 82.04 million foreign entries on the immigration count — and foreign travelers now research, compare and inquire about China trips on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. This guide covers which platforms to use, which source markets to target, what content actually converts, and how to turn followers into booked inquiries.

1 · Platform playbook

Where your future guests actually are

No single platform wins China-bound bookings. Each plays a different role in the traveler's journey — from first discovery to the DM that turns into an inquiry.

FB
Trust & direct inquiries

Facebook

The broadest reach into the 40+ decision-maker age group that books long-haul group tours, plus travel-agent and B2B networks.

  • Business page = your permanent shopfront
  • Groups, events and Messenger DMs carry real inquiries
  • Meta ads with travel-specific audiences
IG
Discovery & DMs

Instagram

Where travelers dream first: destination visuals, itinerary carousels and guest moments that make China feel real and bookable.

  • Reels + carousels + Stories cadence
  • Bio link + DM scripts = clean inquiry path
  • Strongest channel for US & SG female travelers
TT
Reach & new audiences

TikTok

The discovery engine for under-35s. Data-driven, first-timer and culture-contrast content can break out far beyond your follower count.

  • Short-form: policies, data, myths, first-timer POV
  • Wide reach even with a small account
  • Comment section = free market research
YT
Deep trust

YouTube

Long-form proof for the final decision. Full trip vlogs, itinerary explainers and "is it safe / is it easy" answers capture high-intent searches.

  • Seo videos rank for "China tour" long-tail queries
  • Shorts recycle your TikTok cut-downs
  • Evergreen library that compounds trust

Sequencing that works: start with Instagram + Facebook as the inquiry backbone; add TikTok once content cadence is stable; add YouTube as your footage library grows.

2 · Source-market map

China-bound demand is global. Pick your markets by data, not gut feel.

🇺🇸

United States

The US is back in China's top-10 source markets (H1 2026) and a top-3 summer market — long-haul, high-spend, and highly active on IG/TikTok/FB.

Europe & beyond

Germany, France and the UK feed culture- and heritage-driven itineraries; each country needs its own language, trust angles and platform mix.

Policy tailwind: 240-hour visa-free transit (now available to 57 countries including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, EU Schengen states and Singapore) removed the biggest planning barrier for short-notice China trips. See the full visa-free map →
3 · Content system

Six content types that sell China — and a cadence that compounds

Content must be made for the target market, not translated. What wins with Chinese domestic travelers rarely wins with American or Singaporean ones.

Data & policy explainers

Visa-free updates, arrival numbers, new highspeed lines — credible, shareable, and they position you as the China expert.

First-timer logistics

Payments, e-SIM, subway apps, safety — answer the objections that stop travelers from booking.

Destination storytelling

Real footage of cities, food and hotels, shot in China with the foreign traveler's eye — not stock photos.

Guest proof

Recent guest moments and testimonials. Nothing sells a tour like another traveler's real week in China.

Culture-contrast hooks

Highspeed rail vs flying, night markets, robot delivery — the "only in China" moments that drive saves and shares.

Itinerary showcases

Day-by-day cards and route maps that turn "nice content" into "this trip exists and I can book it".

Suggested rhythm: 3-5 posts / week (2-3 reels/shorts, 1-2 carousels or photos) + daily Stories/DM handling, reviewed weekly against reach, saves and — most importantly — DMs received.

4 · Follower-to-inquiry funnel

Likes are vanity. The funnel is the business.

Every post should feed a visible path from "saw you" to "asked you". We run this funnel for every client and ledger every inquiry.

1Content & adsDiscovery on IG/TikTok/FB/YT
2Profile & DMBio link, pinned answers, fast English replies
3HandoffWhatsApp / Email / inquiry form
4Booking follow-upYour sales team closes a warm lead

Two things separate operators who get bookings from those who get likes: reply speed (same-day, on US/European time even when you sleep) and lead hygiene (every DM logged with its source so you know which platform and content type actually pays). Both are exactly what a China-side managed team can guarantee — your night is the US traveler's morning.

5 · Build in-house or work with a partner?

The honest cost question every operator hits in month two

Building it in-house

  • You need a China-side content source for real footage — stock does not sell China trips
  • A hire costs US$2,000-4,000/month before cameras, tools and ad knowledge
  • Coverage gaps: US prime time, English DMs, Meta policy risk, ad optimization
  • Works when you already have the people and can wait 3-6 months

Running it with Xingtu Online

  • China-side in-house team: real footage, English content, US-time community & DM handling
  • Meta primary-agency status with dedicated business support
  • Accounts 100% yours, leads ledgered with original DMs — zero lock-in
  • Fees from ~US$1,100/month (guided) — typically cheaper than one hire, no recruitment risk

FAQ

Questions tour operators ask us

Which social platforms should a China-tour operator start with?
Most operators selling China travel should start with Instagram and Facebook as the inquiry backbone, then add TikTok for reach and YouTube once there is enough real footage. Instagram/Facebook DMs are currently the most direct inquiry channel for China-tour sellers. If your priority is a younger, trend-driven audience, TikTok can move faster — but short-video reach only converts if your funnel (bio link, DM reply, WhatsApp/email handoff) is already in place.
Do we need to run paid ads from day one?
No. The recommended sequence is: position and content first, community next, paid amplification once organic content shows what resonates. When ads do start, run a small cold-start test (roughly US$140-210 in month one) with two or three creative concepts, then scale the winners. Ad spend runs through your own ad account and is fully transparent.
Who owns the social accounts and the leads?
The accounts are 100% legally yours — we hold admin access only and unbind anytime. Every lead is logged with its original DM screenshot and delivered in a monthly ledger you can spot-check. No lock-in, no hostage data.
We are based overseas / based in China — can you still help?
Yes, on both sides of the table — as long as your clients' destination is China. Overseas-based tour operators and agencies get a China-side team that shoots real footage and runs US/Singapore/European-facing channels. China-based DMCs, ground operators and guides get the overseas content, accounts and ad know-how to reach foreign travelers. China-bound tourism is the only thing we do.
How long until we see results?
Typical cadence: positioning audit within 1-3 business days, content live from week 2, cold-start ads from weeks 3-4. Meaningful follower and inquiry signals usually appear within 6-10 weeks of consistent publishing — and they compound. Treat overseas social as a demand asset you build once and feed every week.
