Cost comparison for tour operators & DMCs selling China travel

In-house team or an agency?
The real cost of selling China tours on social media.

Every operator building an overseas channel hits the same fork: hire your own people, or work with a specialist. This page compares the two honestly — loaded salaries, tools, time zones, China-side footage, ad experience, and the hidden costs that only show up in month four.

Side by side: hiring vs partnering

Numbers below are typical market ranges. We compare against our own two service models so you can see where agency money actually goes.

2 · The hidden costs

Why "just hire someone" is usually more expensive than the salary

Four costs never appear on the job posting — and they hit China-tour sellers hardest.

1 · Recruitment runway you do not have

Posting to a productive hire takes 6-10 weeks, then another 4-6 to learn your product. Inbound tourism is seasonal — a China-side hire in June misses the summer window entirely.

2 · The one-person myth

Selling China tours needs English content written for foreign travelers, fresh footage shot in China, community and DMs answered on US time, and Meta travel ads. No single hire is strong at all four — so "one hire" quietly becomes two or three.

3 · The China-footage wall

If you are overseas, nobody on your payroll is in China to film — and stock footage does not sell trips. If you are in China, your team may lack the foreign-traveler eye and platform fluency. One side of this gap is always unfilled.

4 · Paid-ad tuition

Meta travel ads are a regulated, frequently-policy-changing field. Teams learning by burning budget pay tuition in wasted spend and, worse, account restrictions. A Meta primary agency (us) gets dedicated business support and faster recovery if an account is ever restricted.

To be fair to the in-house option: if you already run a mature content team and treat overseas as a slow build, hiring can work. The table above is about the realistic all-in cost — not a rule that agency is always right. See when in-house actually wins ↓

Full-service option (quarterly): ~US$4,150 / quarter (RMB 29,600) including ~US$1,060 ad budget — production, publishing, community, ads and the lead ledger run end-to-end while the accounts stay 100% yours. Ask about it in your audit call.

Pricing note: all service fees are RMB-denominated; US$ figures are indicative conversions (~7.2 RMB/USD) for overseas readers. Billing cycles, deliverables and ad budgets are finalized in your written proposal. Ad spend is not a markup — it runs through your own ad account with invoices you can see.

4 · How to decide

Two honest checklists — one of them will fit you

Building in-house makes sense if…

You already run a content team; you can wait 3-6 months before judging results; overseas volume is a long-term core bet and you accept the runway and the China-footage problem as your own to solve.

Partnering makes sense if…

You want channels live within two weeks; you need China-side footage you cannot film yourself; you want Meta ads run by a primary agency on your own ad account; or you want a low-commitment way to test the US / Singapore / Europe markets before staffing up.

A useful middle path: run a 2-3 month guided or full-service cycle, use the ledgers and data it produces as your business case, then decide whether to bring it in-house with the system already proven. Either way, accounts and data are yours.
FAQ

Questions operators ask before comparing us

Why not just hire one social media manager?
Because one hire is rarely the full cost or the full skill set. A loaded salary is US$4,000-7,000/month depending on location, plus recruitment (often 6-10 weeks), tools and management. Selling China tours needs four skills at once: English content for foreign travelers, China-side filming, community/DM on US time, and Meta ads. Most single hires are strong at one or two of those — the others become overtime, freelancers, or quiet gaps. A guided program from ~US$1,100/month puts the whole chain in place from week one.
How is your pricing structured — are there hidden fees?
No hidden fees. Ad spend runs through your own ad account with invoices you can see; we never markup or hide it. Service tiers are fixed (see pricing above), and the exact scope and cycle are written into your proposal before you commit.
Who owns the accounts, and can we stop anytime?
The accounts are 100% legally yours — we hold admin access only and unbind anytime. There is no lock-in contract beyond the billing cycle you chose, and every lead is delivered with its original DM screenshot in a monthly ledger.
We already have a Chinese-market content team. Can we buy only the overseas part?
Yes. Many clients run domestic channels themselves and use us only for overseas accounts, English content, foreign-traveler angles and Meta ads. What we do not sell is standalone ad-buying without content and community — overseas social for China travel converts only when the funnel is run as one system. How do we verify the work — and how long to results?
Audit within 1-3 business days, content live from week 2, cold-start ads from weeks 3-4; meaningful follower and inquiry signals usually appear within 6-10 weeks of consistent publishing. You verify by the monthly ledger: reach, saves, DMs, and every inquiry traced back to its original post and DM.
