2 · Which route applies

China does not have one visa-free policy. It has five — and clients usually qualify for at least one.

Matching the client to the right route is the difference between a trip that books in a week and one that stalls in a visa queue.

Route 1 · most common

Unilateral visa-free entry

Up to 30 days

Citizens of 50 countries holding ordinary passports can enter China without a visa for business, tourism, family visits, exchange or transit.

  • No application, no fee, no invitation letter
  • Ideal for standard leisure itineraries
  • Most arrangements run to 31 Dec 2026
Route 2 · highest reach

240-hour visa-free transit

Up to 10 days

Citizens of 57 countries transiting to a third country or region can stay up to 240 hours across 24 provincial-level regions and 65 open ports.

  • Includes the US, UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, Japan, Korea, Singapore
  • Tourism, business and family visits all permitted
  • Needs an onward ticket with a confirmed seat and date
Route 3 · long list

Mutual visa-exemption agreements

30 days typical

29 countries have reciprocal agreements with China — Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, the UAE and Kazakhstan among them. Both sides travel visa-free.

  • Best for short-haul Southeast Asian and Gulf markets
  • Rules per country vary — check the agreement terms
  • Strong angle for weekend and repeat-visit products
Route 4 · universal

24-hour port transit

Under 24 hours

Available to all nationalities at every open port in China, provided the traveler does not leave the restricted port area.

  • Useful for long layovers at Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou
  • Leaving the port area needs a temporary entry permit
  • Not a substitute for a real China itinerary
Route 5 · regional

Hainan island visa-free

30 days in Hainan

61 countries can enter through Hainan's open ports and stay up to 30 days within the province — no onward ticket to a third country needed.

  • Resort and beach-club itineraries
  • Cannot travel on to the mainland
  • Often overlooked; a genuinely differentiated product
Fallback

Apply for a visa

Plan 3-6 weeks

If no route fits — long stays, work, study, reporting, or a passport not on any list — the client still needs a visa.

  • Visa-free is granted at the border officer's discretion
  • A visa is the safer choice for rigid, high-value trips
  • Apply 3-6 weeks before departure in peak season

6 · Operator playbook

How to turn visa-free into bookings

Visa-free is not just a policy detail you mention at the end of a quote. It removes the single biggest objection in China-travel sales, and it should be visible in your first three seconds of content.

Lead with it in content

  • Hook: "You can now enter China for 10 days without a visa" — one line, one destination shot
  • Country-specific reels: make one per source market ("Visa-free China from the UK, explained")
  • Policy explainers every time a country is added or extended — they date fast, which is exactly why they get shared
  • Data posts: 17.8 million visa-free arrivals is a number that earns saves and comments

Use it in ads

  • Put the visa-free line in the first line of ad copy, not the last
  • Target by passport country explicitly, and match the creative to that country's rules
  • Refresh creatives within days of any policy change — stale ad claims are the fastest route to a rejected ad
  • Keep claims factual and dated, and never promise guaranteed entry

Answer the DM objection

  • Prepare a one-paragraph English reply covering eligibility, stay length and documents
  • Save it as a pinned post, highlight and DM quick-reply
  • Attach the official source link to build trust and reduce pre-sales friction
  • Log which country each inquiry comes from — it tells you where to spend next

Design products around it

  • 10-day transit-ready routes built for 240-hour eligibility: fly in, travel, fly out to a third country
  • Short-notice departures — visa-free removes the four-week visa wait, so last-minute inventory becomes sellable
  • Hainan packages for the 61-country list, a product almost nobody is marketing abroad
  • Keep a standard visa option ready for clients whose itinerary or passport does not qualify

FAQ

Visa-free questions tour operators ask us

Which countries can enter China visa-free in 2026?
Four routes run in parallel. 50 countries hold unilateral visa-free entry for stays up to 30 days — including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Canada, the United Kingdom and Russia. 57 countries are eligible for 240-hour visa-free transit, adding the United States, Mexico and much of Eastern Europe. 29 countries have full mutual visa-exemption agreements, among them Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, the UAE and Kazakhstan. Every nationality can use 24-hour port transit without leaving the port area.
Does 240-hour visa-free transit apply to US passport holders?
Yes — the United States is on the 240-hour visa-free transit list. The traveler needs a valid passport, an onward ticket to a third country or region with a confirmed seat and date, and must enter through one of the 65 open ports across 24 provincial-level regions. Tourism, business and family visits are all permitted during the 10 days. The usual itinerary that works: fly into Shanghai or Beijing, travel within China, then fly onward to a third country rather than directly home.
Can a visa-free traveler join a normal leisure tour, not just transit?
For the 50 unilateral visa-free countries, yes — tourism is an explicitly permitted purpose for stays up to 30 days. Under 240-hour visa-free transit, tourism is also allowed within the permitted stay areas for up to 10 days, but the traveler must genuinely be in transit to a third country or region. Work, study and news reporting always require a proper visa.
How long can a traveler stay?
Up to 30 days for unilateral visa-free entry. Up to 240 hours (10 days) for visa-free transit, counted from 00:00 of the day after entry. Up to 30 days within Hainan province under the regional scheme that covers 61 countries. If an itinerary needs longer than the applicable limit, the client needs a visa.
When does China's visa-free policy expire?
Most unilateral visa-free arrangements currently run to 31 December 2026. The arrangement for Russia runs to 31 December 2027, and the arrangement for Brunei has no fixed end date. In practice these dates keep being extended — but they are the ones to quote, and they are the reason your marketing should carry a visible "updated" date.
Can we promote visa-free entry in advertising?
Yes, provided the content is accurate, dated and refreshed. Keep statements factual, link to the official National Immigration Administration source, avoid absolute claims such as guaranteed entry, and update creatives whenever a policy is announced or extended. Stale or exaggerated visa claims are one of the most common causes of rejected travel ads on Meta and TikTok.
What documents does a visa-free traveler need at the border?
A valid passport or international travel document — with at least three months validity remaining for transit entry — a completed arrival card, an accommodation address in China, and for 240-hour transit an onward ticket to a third country with a confirmed seat and date. Officers may ask about the purpose of travel, so a simple printed or saved itinerary helps.
Should we still advise some clients to apply for a visa?
Yes. Visa-free entry is granted at the discretion of the border inspection authority, so a visa remains the safer option for rigid, high-value itineraries. A visa is also required whenever the stay exceeds the visa-free limit, the traveller intends to work, study or report, the route does not include an onward third-country segment, or the passport is not on any list.
